After the tragic sinking of the grand Ark Deck & Bar near the sea link, here’s what the owner had to say about the incident.

What Is It?

Last Friday (25/05/2018), Mumbai’s grand floating restaurant Ark Deck & Bar sank in the middle of the sea only after 5 months of being functional. Initially the reports suggested that the anchor accidentally moved due to unpredictable sea currents, but now the owner has made a statement regarding this.

The owners and officials claim that the paperwork, licences and other formalities were in perfect order and they’ve kept every government and local regulatory requirement including the maintenance procedures. Despite that, investigations are still being conducting to establish whether or not the drowning was only a scam for insurance purposes.

Officials from the Maharashtra Maritime Board are asking why this ship was allowed in the sea in the first place. Ark Deck & Bar was over 50 years old, and any ship over 25 years old isn’t allowed to go back to sea.

This is what one of the owners had to say –

We are deeply saddened and shattered by the recent unfortunate occurrence. From the onset all our paperwork, licences and other formalities have been in perfect order in keeping with every govt and local regulatory requirement including our maintenance procedures. In order to perfectly follow the safety protocol the Floatel was scheduled to be moved away from its location to be docked at Mazgaon on 26.5.18. Upon Receiving the ominous weather and sea forecast the vessle was being readied to set sail for the docks in fact a day prior to the original date of the 26th. The floatel was not functional nor open to any patrons when the incident occurred. Essentially the tumultuous undercurrent dislodged our anchor causing the vessel to drift and collide with bedrock creating ominous damage . As a result the vessel tilted and partly sank . No member of the crew was injured and were all in ferried to safety way prior to the above and even before the first assistance from the Coast guard team arrived . Detailed investigations in regard to the exact extent of damage and vessel salvage are underway. The avior is a lease vessle on which our brand the Ark deck bar is being run. Our Brand, F&B and management operations on board have no connect in any form with any matters pertaining to insurance and claims structure of and for the owner of the ship. We Hope to resolve all the investigative and salvage matters ar the earliest

What Do We Know?

Due to the monsoon, the floatel was scheduled to be moved away from its location to be docked at Mazgaon on 26/05/2018. But because of the unforeseen weather, it was going to seat sail a day prior for the docks. During the time the floating restaurant hit the rock, there were no patrons onboard and only crew members. Despite tremendous efforts to repair damage, the hole couldn’t be fixed and the ship had to be evacuated.

According to reports, a great amount of oil spill and damage has been done to the environment after the sinking. The owners will have to pay nearly ₹1 crore to salvage the floating restaurant as well as pay compensation for the environmental damage.

Detailed investigations in regard to the exact extent of damage and vessel salvage are underway. Regarding the insurance claims, the owner claims that their brand, F&B and management operations on board have no connect in any form with any matters pertaining to insurance and claims structure of and for the owner of the ship.
