7 Simple Hacks To A First-Class Upgrade Without Paying For It

We don’t really like spending money unnecessarily on things (even if we totally have our eyes on them), unless it’s given to us for free. Oh, us mere mortals. Our excitement automatically doubles when our lives are made eventful (read: luxurious) for free. How ironic–luxurious and free in the same sentence–isn’t it?

But you know what, it is possible, yes! You can get a free first-class upgrade from Economy to Business if you plan smart. We tell you everything that you must try to avail that (free) upgrade because we believe that you should experience it at least once so you know what to splurge on when you feel rich sometime in the future.

1. Ask Politely And Directly

You must have heard, honesty is the best policy. Instead of getting mad or sad and throwing tantrums, and beating around the bush trying the airline staff to understand (by some magical stroke of luck) that you want an effing upgrade, just ask for it. Tell them that if they’re looking to upgrade someone, they should consider you.

2. Demand One If You’ve Been Inconvenienced

Please ask for an upgrade if you’ve been caused any kind of inconvenience. The airline should, most definitely, compensate if they know they’re in the wrong. All you have to do is ask.

3. Be Kind And Offer Your Seat In An Overbooked Flight

If you don’t mind giving up your seat when your flight is overbooked and killing a few hours lounging around at the airport, chances are that the airline is going to bump you up to first class on the later flight. Try and see, being kind never hurt anyone.

4. Arrive Really Early Or Very Late

If you’re early try chatting up with the gate agents; building a rapport will help them remember you in case there are empty seats at the front of the plane. And if you’re late, and if it’s a perpetually overbooked flight, the agents are going to just put you there lest you miss your flight.

5. Be Loyal To The Airline

If you book your tickets directly through their website, eliminating all middlemen, and if you do it repeatedly, sticking to them like glue, you are bound to get noticed and valued. You’ll see how easy snagging upgrades will become.

6. Dress Well

If you dress like a pauper, don’t ever dream of a first class experience. Let alone actually getting an upgrade. So dress like you own the friggin’ airline, and who knows you might be given a chance to own a business class seat for a while, if not the entire aircraft. You know, first impressions always count.

7. Use Travel Rewards Cards

Travel rewards credit cards are one of the things to totally own, where for a small annual fee, you get frequent flier miles (that you can redeem for a ticket) for every buck you spend, hotels you stay at, and airline tickets you book. And many offer enough bonus miles to get a free ticket as soon as you sign up.
