What Is It?
The A-Ma temple, also known as the Mazu Temple, located in the southeast of Macau Peninsula, is among the oldest religious temples in Macao. In fact, Macao got its name from this temple. When the Portugese first landed in Macao, they asked the locals what the name of the land was. The locals misunderstood this, as them asking for the name of the temple and told them, it’s called A-Ma-Gao. This eventually got changed to Macao.

The A-Ma temple is over 5 centuries old and was built way back in 1488. The temple was built to commemorate Goddess Mazu. She is known as the Goddess of the Sea and the Protector of Fishermen. The temple is the most ideal representation of Chinese culture and has been inspired by Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism and several folk beliefs.
