What Is It?

Waitrose has started a 12-week trial program from June 16, wherein five of its stores in Abu Dhabi will charge customers for plastic bags. The campaign is intended to ditch the plastic bag habit and promote zero-waste shopping in a country that consumes 11 billion bags annually. The following Waitrose outlets in Abu Dhabi have already started charging customers 25 fils for every plastic bag: Waitrose Etihad Towers, Sun and Sky Reem Island, Al Zeina, Saadiyat Beach Community and Eastern Mangroves.

What Else?

Spinneys has also said that it is planning to implement the carrier bag charge if the program is a success. Alternatively, Waitrose is also starting a programme called “in-store bag exchange,” which will hopefully encourage shoppers to bring their used bags and deposit at the store for other shoppers to use in case they don’t have one. This, in turn, will avoid shoppers from having to buy bags. At grocery chains such as Carrefour, Union Coop and Choithrams, shoppers can use biodegradable bags for free.
