6 High-Altitude Lakes In Uttarakhand

1. Deoria Tal

This is quite an easy trek from Sari which is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. We suggest you start exploring lakes in the mountains from this destination. Witness the pretty clear waters and majestic views of mountains. The lake appears to be so clear that it reflects its surroundings just like a mirror! You have to take Pinterest-y pictures here.

2. Brahmatal

This high-altitude lake in Uttarakhand is famous for its bewitching views of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. Trekkers generally hike during the winter months to experience thick snow and gorgeous snow peaks. It is such a terrific experience to witness a frozen lake amidst the frosty environment! It is truly a fantastic location.

3. Satopanth Tal

This one out of the entire list of high-altitude lakes in Uttarakhand is a roughly triangular-shaped glacial lake! Sounds extremely cool and has lovely landscape scenes. You will notice Neelkanth, Chaukhamba and Swargarohini while visiting this lake. Apart from that, this is regarded as a sacred water body in the Hindu mythology.

4. Hemkund Lake

Pack your sturdy trekking shoes and go for a hike to Hemkund Sahib, popularly known as Hemkund Lake. It is quite challenging but the ethereal views of seven snow-capped peaks along with the adventures make this trek worth it! As the name suggests, this glacial lake is considered a significant pilgrimage site for Sikhs. After a successful trek, people visit the Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara located on the banks of this lake.

5. Kedartal

This lake in Uttarakhand receives water from the Kedar Glacier. Hence, it is also known as Shiva’s Lake. This panoramic landscape offers views of the crystal-clear waters from the glacier and snow mountains. Some of them are Thalay Sagar, Meru, and Bhrigupanth peaks. If you are an adventure junkie, then you have to plan a trek to Kedartal. It is challenging due to its rugged terrain.

6. Roopkund Lake

Uttarakhand’s one of the most scenic and spooky high-altitude lakes is Roopkund Lake. This glacial lake which mostly remains snow-covered is also known as Skeleton Lake. It is named so as hundreds of human skeletons are seen on its edge! It is said that these skeletal remains might date back to the 9th century.

Height: 5029 m
