Getting your Visa through can be a troublesome procedure. In a series of unfortunate events, when two people reached the Maldives for their vacations, their visa upon arrival was denied. The complainants, Sajidullah Khan and Shaik Arbaaz, who are both residents of Adilabad in Telangana had booked an international tour package to the Maldives which was worth well over ₹5 lakhs. However, upon landing in the Maldives, their visa on arrival was denied.

They were therefore forced to return without actually getting to visit the country. Following this, they filed an official complaint. They alleged that the reason their visa was denied was that the staff of MakeMyTrip hadn’t made the necessary arrangements. According to them, the rejection of their visa was a deficiency in service by the portal. They, therefore, demanded that the portal be held accountable for its callousness.

In response to the complaints, MakeMyTrip denied accountability and said that it was not responsible for this unfortunate event. They said that they were merely a facilitator of travel and cannot be held responsible since the users are bound by their terms and conditions.

Furthermore, they also said that international travel was subject to the fulfilment of certain requirements the responsibility of which does not fall on the portal. However, this response by the MakeMytrip team was not deemed substantial enough by the district consumer commission.

According to them, upon the receipt of payment, it becomes the responsibility of the portal to ensure that the passenger has a “perfect” travel experience. Since MakeMyTrip failed to do that, it must now refund the entire amount of ₹5,290,220 to the complainants. In addition to that, they must also pay ₹1 lakh as compensation.
