Only 24 Pilots Are Certified To Land Airplanes At Bhutan’s Paro Airport! Why Is Landing So Difficult Here?

Paro Airport

The scenic views of the spectacular terrains of the earth from the windows of the aeroplanes are always a fascinating sight! Staring at the magnificent mountains, vast oceans and city lights from up above the sky is amazing. Though a quick prayer is recited when there is turbulence. On top of that, landing at one of the world’s most challenging airports surrounded by 5,500 metres (18,000 ft) of mountain peaks makes it more challenging. We are talking about none other than Paro Airport in Bhutan where landing is one of the most difficult missions!

Why Is Landing Difficult At Paro Airport In Bhutan?

Recently, our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, visited Bhutan to explore its culture, heritage and tourist sites. She shared her experience of taking a flight from Delhi to Paro and witnessing splendid views of Mount Everest and Kangchenjunga through fluffy clouds, passing by Kathmandu and finally landing at one of the most dangerous and challenging airports in the world, Paro Airport. Kamiya had a lovely chat with the pilots in the cockpit where she learnt that she was flying in one of the most impressive aeroplanes of Paro, A319.

The geographical location of Paro Airport, the only international airport in Bhutan, makes it a dangerous landing site. The airport is situated in the middle of the valley with lush mountains and a dense forest. It has a shorter and narrower runway of about 1,200 metres. Hence, there is a specific requirement for the choice of aeroplane to be operated from Paro as the location makes it extremely tough to navigate. Only 24 certified pilots with the help of the Ground Proximity Warning System (GWPS) are authorised to land aeroplanes here!

Taking Turns To Reach The Final Destination

Another notable fact about flying to Paro and landing at Paro Airport is the sharp turns. The sharp 45° turns might make your stomach jump and your heart in the mouth! This makes the mountain peaks appear a little too close to the aeroplane.

Right before the landing, there is a quick turn to nail the landing, so you better watch out for that! However, you are in excellent hands and will land safely at your destination when you fly with Bhutan Airlines.
