The next time you find yourself humming to the catchy Bollywood song Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast, you can damn right be sure that a thief lurking around the nearby retail store might be humming the same. Surprised? Well, when it comes to the world’s most stolen food it isn’t that exquisite bottle of liquor, expensive spice Saffron, exotic White Truffle, chocolates or even Kobe Beef, it’s Cheese. Yes, Cheese is the world’s most stolen food according to global studies.


What’s More?

Cheese is one of the world’s most popular foods and also a victim of abduction. Sad! Over 4% of the total cheese made globally is actually stolen. It’s the most stolen food in the world. A report by the UK’s Centre for Retail Research surveyed 1187 retailers representing 2,50,000 retail outlets from 43 countries and finally concluded that Cheese is at a higher risk of being stolen than chocolate or alcohol. Unbelievable right?

At least 4% of cheese disappears from store shelves across the world. Employees and shoplifters are the biggest threats to retailers worldwide. Surveys conducted by the National Retail Federation in the USA also found out that cheese is one of the most stolen goods in the retail outlets there.


Why Cheese?

So here comes the cheesy question, Why Cheese? Like there are plenty of other expensive, exquisite and exotic food items that are much more valuable and theft worthy. Then why do shoplifters and thieves resort to stealing cheese across the world?  Criminologist Ron Clarke stated that cheese is one food item that is widely enjoyed, easy to conceal and its kept in fridges rather than shelves, which are subject to less surveillance at retail outlets. Cheese also proves to be a lucrative business opportunity for petty criminals. The price of cheese which is used in global cuisines is just rising by the day. So if the cheese is stolen it’s is used for resale and resold into markets and restaurants. So here you have it, it’s time you secure your refrigerators as tightly secure your lockers. After all cheese today, theft tomorrow right?
