1. Alcatraz Island, San Francisco - One of the most famous prisons, it began to be used as one in 1934.

2. Carcel de Carabanchel, Spain - This panopticon-style prison was built using the slave labour of its prisoners.

3. New Mexico State Penitentiary, Mexico - Designed for 800 inmates, it was decommissioned in 1998.
