Bhutan’s Upcoming Airport

Bhutan will soon have a new international airport and Danish architecture firm, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), just dropped its stunning designs.

After Paro International Airport,  this would be Bhutan’s second international airport.

Nature & Innovation

The 68,000-square-metre airport will be surrounded by lush subtropical forests, rivers, and mountains, and will be located near the Bhutan-Indian border.

Blending With Nature

According to BIG, airport architecture is composed of modular mass timber frames providing flexibility and expandability, resembling a stylised mountain range at a distance.

Airport’s Capacity 

According to Times Now, the airport  will handle 123 flights daily. It is projected to welcome 1.3 million passengers annually by 2040.

More About The Airport

A courtyard called Forest Spine will cut through the terminal, flanked by a section each of domestic and international flights. The green space will offer peaceful tranquil spaces, a treetop walkway, and indigenous biodiversity.
