Long back in the 1950s, this mouth-watering chicken preparation originated in a Delhi restaurant named Moti Mahal.

Interestingly, the cooks invented this delectable dish unknowingly. They prepared a recipe with a leftover marinating mix of butter and tomatoes. Then they cooked tandoori chicken pieces in the gravy and this is how the world-famous butter chicken came into existence. And now you can cook this at your home too.

How Was This Recipe Cooked For The First Time?

Begin the cooking process by marinating chicken pieces with salt, red chili powder, lemon juice, turmeric, cumin powder, garam masala, hung curd, ginger-garlic paste, and some oil.

1. First, Marinate Everything!

Keep the marinated chicken in the refrigerator for at least 7-8 hours. This long time will make the pieces tender and softer.

2. Refrigerate It

You can either fry or grill or even cook the chicken on an iron tawa. 

3. Fry The Chicken Pieces

To make the gravy, add butter to a pan and add cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves to it. Then add ginger garlic paste and saute everything well. It's time to add all the powder masalas to it.

4. Cook The Saucy Gravy

To the mix, add tomato puree, and boil everything well. The next step is to add cashew paste and water to the gravy. Once it is ready, add all the fried chicken pieces to it.

At last, add 2-3 tbsp of fresh cream, and butter chicken is ready to be served.
