Walt Disney World Resort in Florida is lovingly called the most magical place on earth. And it’s certainly a treat for our inner child.

But did you know that there are no mosquitoes at Disney World, despite being built on a swamp land?

The credit for achieving this massive feat goes to Major General William Everett Joe Potter, an MIT graduate and engineering expert.

He was supposedly hired on the spot by Walt Disney, after he got to know about his previous experience of controlling mosquitoes at the World Fair, in 1964.

To achieve this goal, he first built drainage ditches (came to be known as Joe’s Ditches), to make the swamp lands buildable.

The second step in the process was to ensure that water is constantly flowing, as mosquitoes lay their eggs in still water.

Even the ponds at Disney World have fishes that eat mosquitoes, like minnows and goldfish.

For landscaping, plants with mosquito-repellent properties were planted across the area.

Finally, a minute amount of garlic spray is used to ensure there are no mosquitoes. This amount is so tiny, that humans cannot detect the stench!
