From 1906 To 1947, Here's How India's National Flag Has Changed Over The Years

The national flag of India has witnessed many evolution during the pre-independence decades. The changes and representation over the years showcased India's fight for freedom.

India's first national flag was hoisted for the first time in history in 1906 during the Swadeshi and Boycott movement. The flag with green, yellow, and red stripes, and lotus symbols was hoisted in Parsee Bagan Square, Calcutta (known as Kolkata presently).

Indian flag with saffron, yellow, and green horizontal stripes was hoisted in 1907. Bhikaiji Cama raised the flag on August 22, 1907.

2. 1907

Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Annie Besant unveiled the third national flag during the Home Rule Movement in 1917. It reflected the spirit of the movement.

3. 1917

Pingali Venkayya designed the national flag in 1921. It had red, white, and green stripes and a spinning wheel at the centre.

4. 1921

1931 is one of the most significant years in the history of the Indian national flag's evolution. Keeping the existing white and green colours, red was replaced by saffron showcasing courage.

5. 1931

The Constituent Assembly adopted the present-day flag in July 1947. Ashoka's Dharma Chakra is represented on the tricolour flag with saffron, white, and green stripes.
