Bharla Karla For Foodies 

Akshada Desai Lobo shared a recipe for Bharla Karla, a bitter gourd or karela dish. It goes great with dal-rice.

Ingredients 

- 6 small karela or bitter gourds - 1/3 cup onions (chopped) - 1/3 cup fresh coconut (grated) - 1/3 cup roasted peanut powder - salt - 1/2 tsp turmeric - 1 to 2 red chilli powder - 1 heaped tsp coriander powder - 3/4 tsp cumin powder - 1/2 lemon juice - 1 tsp jaggery (recommended) - oil for frying

Step 1 

Wash the bitter gourds, then cut the ends and cut a slit on them. After you cut the slits, de-seed each of them.

Steam the karelas for 8 to 10 minutes till they are half done.

Step 2 

For the filling, mix powdered peanuts, jaggery, lemon juice grated coconut, onions and masalas. Mix it well.

Then, stuff the half-cooked karelas generously with the freshly made mixture.

Step 4

Pan fry the stuffed karelas with a little oil till they are nicely cooked. Your Bharla Karla is ready!
