Nawayathi Food: A Fading Traditional Indian Cuisine & Its Origins

Nawayath is a fading Indian traditional cuisine that comes from the Muslims of the Karavali coast of Karnataka.

Settled in regions like Bhatkal, Malpe and more, Nawayath means newcomers and it refers to their Arabic roots.

As such, their food, too, has an Arabic influence. The most popular dish is the Bhatkali biryani.

But the cuisine is fading from Indian culture because a lot of its food items are elaborate and time-consuming.

Especially dishes like Mudkoley or Mudkale, which are steamed rice dumplings cooked in an aromatic stew.

Tarye Poli and Khubusa Poli are two of its most delicious desserts. They’re essentially different kinds of puddings.

Another kind of pudding is Nasna Manni, which is topped with sesame seeds.

There are only a few people in India who know about this cuisine and even fewer who know how to cook it.
