A recently published study shared some interesting information about how the consumption of fish has witnessed a significant uptick in the past few years.

The 'Fish Consumption In India: Patterns And Trends' study has been conducted by a collaboration of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, the Government of India, WorldFish India, and more departments.

To find the data, researchers used information from 2005-2006 to 2019-2021, according to a report by The Times of India. This timeframe helped them to see the shift in fish consumption in the country.

According to a report by NDTV, the reasons behind the noticeable rise in fish consumption are: • Increase in population • Consumers becoming wealthy • A change in consumption patterns

From 730.6 million, the proportion of fish eaters jumped to 966.9 million. There has been a rise of about 32 per cent, from 66 per cent to 72.1 per cent.

With 99.35 per cent, the highest proportion of fish eaters came from Tripura. Looks like the people in the Northeast and East states of India consumed fish in large numbers as the list continued with Tripura, Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and West Bengal.

• The proportion was over 90 per cent in Goa, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. • On the other hand, the fish consumption pattern was reportedly low in Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. It was below 30 per cent. • Surprisingly, there has been the highest surge in people consuming fish in Jammu and Kasmir with 20.9 per cent.
