According to an article which was recently published by News18, this initiative is taken with the aim of reducing malpractices when it comes to using FASTags. Hence, the NHAI is advising FASTag users to complete the Know Your Customer or KYC process as soon as possible.

This is to be done in tandem with the guidelines put forth by the Reserve Bank of India or RBI. The NHAI has also announced that if the users fail to complete the process before January 31, 2024, then their FASTags will be deactivated.

It is important to note that the accounts will be deactivated even if they have balances. Furthermore, FASTags with incomplete KYC after January 31 will also be blacklisted by the banks. This was stated in a press release by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Though FASTag has revolutionised toll collection, many people have misused it. Many have multiple FASTags connected to just one vehicle or have one FASTag connected to multiple vehicles at the same time.

This hinders in having a smooth and streamlined toll collection system and hence, the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative was launched to ensure that each vehicle has just one FASTag connected to it.
