Punjab Govt Hikes Bus Fare By 23 Paise Per Km Due To Fuel Price Rise; Estimated To Generate Revenue Of ₹150 Crore

Travelling by bus in Punjab just got a little bit more expensive. The State Transport Department of Punjab recently announced that they have increased the fares of the bus service across the state. This rise in price is owing to the increase in prices of fuel. It is hoped that this will help in generating more revenue. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about this particular hike in price.

According to an article which was recently published by The Indian Express or IE, the minimum fare for bus travel is now ₹15. This hike in bus fares is to offset the rise in fuel prices. The state offers free bus travel to women. If reports are to go by, the state will also have to deal with a rise in reimbursements for the same.

If reports are to go by, fares for ordinary buses have increased by 23 paise per kilometre. For ordinary HVAC buses, which stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, the price has been increased by 28 paise per kilometre.

The prices for integral coaches have been increased by 41 paise per kilometre. For Super Integral coaches, there is a price increase of 46 paise per kilometre. These hikes in prices were brought into effect on Saturday, September 7, 2024.

A Bid To Generate More Revenue To Grapple With Fuel Price

In addition to offsetting the increased cost of fuel, officials are also hoping to increase revenue generated from bus fares. It is hoped that a whopping ₹150 crore will be generated in bus fares after the price is hiked.

It is important to note, however, that since the state offers free transport to women, claims for reimbursement will also rise. An article by Tribune India mentioned that around ₹50 crores worth of reimbursement requests will also be generated after the increase.
