As per last week, Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley announced that Hampi in Karnataka will be developed as an iconic tourist site in India.
What Is It?
The Hampi monuments have been a part of Karantaka’s heritage scene since centuries and it will now be developed as per the top 10 iconic sites of the country. The government has proposed to develop 10 iconic sites as per their infrastructure and holistic development. Along with that, tourist amenities will be upgraded at the site.

What Do We Know?
The developments are not just limited to the infrastructure of the monument, but tourist facilities as well. It will include upgrades of seating benches, toilets, drinking water availability, dustbins, parking facilities, landscaping, ticket counters and more. Many people who visit the monument use the area behind it to attend to their nature’s call and that will in turn destroy the area as a whole. Reforms like this have to be taken to maintain the beauty and the tourism will be kept active at these sites.

What Else?
There are 57 monuments that comprise the ruins of Hampi covering an area of around 41.1 sq km. This initiative was taken to enhance International tourists visiting Hampi. So initially the ruins of Hampi was maintained under Central Archaeology Department and now it will be transferred to the United Nations as a World Heritage Site.
