Kuwait News Agency mentions that Wahba Crater is also known as Maqla Tamiyyah. Yes, it is a breathtaking natural wonder located in Hurrat Khishb, about 270 kilometres northeast of Jeddah. This massive crater is one of the largest and most stunning in the world.

UNESCO Recognised Geological Site

Wahba Crater ranks among the world’s largest and most stunning volcanic craters. It is also one of the largest dry Al-Maar volcanoes globally. This crater is part of a monogenetic volcanic field, containing 175 small volcanoes, aged between 2 million and a few hundred thousand years, spanning approximately 6,000 square kilometres. It was formed about 1.1 million years ago and is around 250 meters deep and 2.3 kilometers in diameter and nearly three times wider than typical volcanoes. The crater also features a saline basin or shallow lake, formed by accumulated rainwater. During the summer months, the crater’s water lake evaporates, transforming into a sabkha. However, in the rainy season, the crater comes alive with vibrant wild plants growing on its edges.

Its recent recognition by UNESCO further underscores its global significance and highlights the importance of preserving such natural wonders.
