Deadly Landslides In Brazil Claim 10 Lives
On Saturday night, Brazil’s Ipatinga city received around 80 millimetres of rainfall in just one hour. After the heavy rain, landslides were witnessed in the region and so far, nine people have been reported dead. Among them, an eight-year-old boy was found dead under the debris of a house destroyed by the landslide. According to France 24, the rescue teams recovered another body in the nearby town of Santana do Paraiso.
Another region affected is Betânia. A landslide, reportedly, swept away everything in its path along a street on the side of a hill there. As per the latest report, several people have been reported missing in Southeast Brazil after the deadly landslides. Search and rescue teams are on sight in all affected areas. Many people have been rescued and transferred to safer places for now. Photos and videos emerging online show houses flooded with water and debris and mud poking out.

Record-Breaking Rain Last Year That Wreck Havoc In The Country
This isn’t the first time that Brazil has been affected by a severe weather event in recent years. Before these deadly landslides, in April and May of 2024, record-breaking rainfall caused massive floods in South Brazil. The devastating floods killed more than 180 people in the region.
Brazil also suffered a historic drought, which climate experts believe is an effect of climate change, last year. This drought ended up causing the worst wildfires in the country in the last 17 years! These wildfires consumed a big part of the Amazon rainforest and caused massive damage.
We pray that the situation in Brazil improves soon and normalcy is restored.
