In Malappuram, Kerala, a 14-year-old boy has been diagnosed with the Nipah virus, as confirmed by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune. The boy, who is currently in critical condition, has been admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Authorities have urged residents to stay alert and have set up control rooms to assist those who may have come into contact with the infected individual.

Nipah Virus Resurges In Kerala

On Saturday, the Pandikkad teen’s test results revealed that he had the Nipah virus. There are currently 214 people under observation who had contact with the boy, and the Kerala Health Department is keeping a close eye on the situation. NDTV reports state that sixty of these are deemed high-risk. To control potential spread, authorities are testing and isolating individuals who fall into the high-risk category.

Humans are primarily infected with the Nipah virus by fruit bats. Direct contact with bat saliva, contaminated food, and, in certain situations, respiratory droplets and bodily fluids can all be ways for it to spread from person to person.

Here’s All About The Virus

Usually occurring 5 to 14 days after exposure, the virus causes fever, headaches, and muscle aches as its initial symptoms. Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), convulsions, disorientation, and respiratory problems like coughing and sore throats are among the progressive symptoms. Unfortunately, fatalities and comas can come from severe cases.

The Nipah virus does not have a specific antiviral treatment. Supportive care, which includes treating symptoms as they appear and preserving fluid and electrolyte balance, is a part of management.

Avoid contact with fruit bats and pigs as much as possible, especially in areas where the deadly virus is spreading. It is also important to make sure that everything is cooked through, especially fruits. The use of personal protective equipment and routine hand washing can also aid in halting the spread.

Restrictions within a 3-kilometer radius of the epicentre of the outbreak are being considered by the Kerala government. They have also activated a 24-hour control room in Malappuram. To stop the spread and properly handle the situation, local authorities are working together.

Residents who might have been in contact with the infected individual are also encouraged to reach out to the Nipah control rooms for assistance and testing.
