Nepal is reeling from devastating floods and landslides that have claimed at least 148 lives. The tragedy unfolded after three days of relentless monsoon rains. The weather improved on Sunday, allowing rescuers to intensify search and recovery efforts.

Intense Monsoon Rains Trigger Floods And Landslides In Nepal

The areas around Kathmandu, the capital, were among the worst affected. Rescuers have been working tirelessly to retrieve bodies buried under landslides. A massive landslide engulfed two buses travelling towards Kathmandu on Saturday. By Sunday, rescuers had recovered 14 bodies overnight from these buses. They later found another 23 bodies at the same spot. The location is about 16 kilometres (10 miles) from Kathmandu, and rescuers fear more people are still buried there.

Kathmandu remained cut off for much of Sunday. Multiple landslides blocked three highways leading out of the city. Workers are using heavy equipment to clear the roads, and the government is focusing efforts on reconnecting the capital to the rest of the country.

Many Regions Affected

The devastation has affected many regions across Nepal. The southern part of Kathmandu faced severe flooding, with homes submerged as the water rose rapidly on Saturday. By Sunday, water levels began to recede, and residents started cleaning their mud-filled houses. The destruction left many families displaced and uncertain of what the future holds.

Nepal Police confirmed in a statement that the flooding and landslides injured 101 people. Rescue workers are still searching for 50 people reported missing. Officials believe the death toll could rise as they receive more information from remote villages scattered across the mountainous regions.

The rescue efforts have been a joint operation involving police, soldiers, and local volunteers. Teams worked non-stop to search for survivors, remove debris, and help people move to safer locations. Rescue teams used heavy machinery to dig out vehicles and clear roadblocks caused by landslides in Kathmandu and other affected areas.

The government has declared a three-day closure of all schools and colleges across Nepal in response to the crisis. The monsoon season, which started in June, has already led to heavy rainfall in various parts of the country. The season usually ends by mid-September, but this year’s rains have been particularly intense, resulting in significant damage.
