200,000 Expats Lose Jobs In Oman, Workforce Drops By 14.3 Percent

Covid-19 pandemic is not only spreading like wildfire, but it’s also affecting the livelihoods of people. People across the globe are losing their job, and the pandemic has affected all of us in one way or another. Some of us are dealing with the loss of our loved ones, while others are trying to make ends meet after abruptly losing their jobs. When it comes to losing jobs, so far, more than 222,300 expats working in public, private and family sectors have lost their jobs in Oman.

The Total Workforce In Oman Drops By 14. 3 Per Cent

According to the data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the expats have lost the job amid the pandemic. As per the data, 10,700 people were working in the government, 181,200 were employed in the private sector and 30,400 in the family sector. Owing to this, the total expat workforce has dropped by 14.3 per cent in Oman.

Most Of The Expats Losing Jobs In Oman Are From Bangladesh, India And Pakistan

In terms of decline, the government sector observed a sharp decline of 19.9 per cent; whereas, the private sector saw a decrease of 14.9 per cent. In terms of the family sector, there was a 10.4 per cent decline. The figure released by the NCSI revealed that the majority of terminated workers were Bangladeshis, followed by Indians and Pakistanis. Elsewhere in the region, Saudi Arabia has also been struggling to hold onto its expat workers.

Front-line Workers In Oman To Be The First In The Country To Receive Vaccine

In terms of Covid-19, Oman healthcare workers, police and military personnel will be the first to receive the covid-19 vaccine. Dr Mohammed bin Saif Al Hosani, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, said in that statement that Oman will receive 10 per cent of the vaccine from GAVI before the end of this year, and the remaining 10 per cent from other vaccine manufacturers in the same period.

“This means the Sultanate will have 20 per cent of the vaccines before the end of this year. Health workers, police, and military personnel who work on the frontline will take it first.”
