209 Bird Species, 82 Butterflies & More, Mumbai’s Around 3000-Acre Vikhroli Mangrove Is A Precious Ecosystem

Vikhroli Mangrove

In the heart of the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, lies an ecological oasis, the Vikhroli Mangrove. The Vikhroli Mangrove is not only a biodiversity hotspot but also a guardian of the city’s ecological stability. Moreover, this unique ecosystem serves as a crucial buffer against urbanisation’s relentless encroachment.

Vikhroli Mangroves: The City’s Breathing Element

One of Maharashtra’s largest private mangrove forests is the one in Vikhroli, with around 3000 acres. They are managed by the Godrej Foundation since the 1940s. More than 16 different species of mangroves, 82 butterfly species, 209 bird species, 13 crab species, 7 prawn species, 20 fish species, and a few mammals call this place home. These dense thickets of vegetation act as a natural barrier, protecting coastal areas and human settlements from the brunt of nature’s fury.

Godrej and Boyce have been working to research, record, and monitor the varied flora and fauna of the Vikhroli mangroves. To date, 37 of the 82 spider species, as well as 209 birds, 82 butterflies, 32 reptiles, and 6 mammal species have been identified there. In addition, “Mangroves” became the first forest in India to receive ISO 14001 certification in 1997.

The Vikhroli Mangrove’s significance extends beyond its physical attributes. It is a sanctuary for a rich array of plant and animal species, some of which are endangered or critically endangered.

Mangroves appear to be our species’ most powerful weapon as more is learned about them. Because of their physical makeup, they are unable to rest much while serving the coasts. And we are aware of how unforgiving this city can be to all of its citizens.

The mangrove acts as a nursery for countless marine species, providing a safe haven for their early stages of development. It supports an intricate food web. There’s dense vegetation serving as feeding and breeding grounds for various species of fish, crustaceans, and insects. Birds, both migratory and resident, find refuge in the mangroves, making it a haven for birdwatchers and researchers alike.

As the city of Mumbai continues to expand, the fate of the Vikhroli Mangrove remains intertwined with the choices its inhabitants make. The story of the Vikhroli Mangrove serves as a reminder that the city’s growth need not come at the cost of its natural treasures.
