Imagine a tall Shiv Linga that was not made by human hands but emerged naturally from the earth, standing tall at an astounding 25 feet. Hidden within the lush forests of Kardo in Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh, this largest natural Shiv Linga at the Siddeshwar Nath Temple is a breathtaking sight that has left both devotees and explorers in awe.
The World’s Largest Natural Shiv Linga In Ziro
Unlike most temples where Shiv Lingas are carved, the one in Ziro was discovered in July 2004 by accident. Prem Subha, a local Nepalese man, was cutting down a tree when it suddenly fell away rather than crashing into a mysterious stone formation. Intrigued by the incident, he looked at the formation and realised that this was no typical rock. As soon as the word got out, both locals and academics agreed that the structure in front of them was a naturally formed Shiv Linga, the tallest in the world.
The Shiv Linga itself is not the only feature that makes this holy place special. Natural rock formations next to it are shaped like the goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha, with the latter’s trunk clearly turning to the left. Devotees believe this represents the divine Shiv family.
Adding to the mystical charm of this site, a soft stream of water continuously flows from the base of the Linga. According to Hindu mythology, devotees think that this phenomenon is related to Lord Shiva’s presence with Ganga. This rare occurrence deepens the spiritual significance.

A Sanctuary Amidst Arunachal’s Beauty
Many people think that this tall Linga fulfils an old prophecy found in the Shiva Purana (Nava Khand, Chapter 17, 1893 edition). According to the text, a huge Shiv Linga appeared in ‘Lingalaya,’ which would later become Arunachal Pradesh. This has certainly resulted in a rise in devotion. Pilgrims and academics come from all over India to see Lord Shiva’s miraculous manifestation.
Ziro itself is an enchanting destination. Known for its rolling green valleys, paddy fields, and the warm hospitality of the Apatani tribe, it offers a breathtaking setting for spiritual seekers and nature lovers alike. The tranquillity of the region also adds to the temple’s spirituality. Whether you’re a devotee of Lord Shiva, a spiritual traveller, or simply someone who appreciates nature’s marvels, the Siddeshwar Nath Temple in Ziro is an unmissable destination.
