Saudi Arabia has a rich cultural and heritage past. And now, Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, the Saudi Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Heritage Commission has announced that the kingdom has successfully inscribed some important cultural practices in UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. From henna to Taif roses, here are all three practices that have been inscribed on the list.

Taif Roses Included In UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List

Taif Roses has joined other Saudi Intangible Cultural Heritage elements that are already inscribed on UNESCO’s list. For those who aren’t aware, some of the other names on the list include Arabic coffee, falconry, date palm, and Sadu weaving. In fact, the Taif Roses are a vital cultural and social element.

These have been intertwined with the lives of the people in the region and the cultivation spans centuries. In fact, the process is integral to daily activities, which is deeply reflected in the region’s social and traditional practices. There are several renowned products, which include rosewater and essential oils. Not to mention, the community gathers in the rose fields to partake in harvesting, which also creates an opportunity for social interaction.

Henna Making & Semsemiah Instrument included In The List

Henna-making has also been inscribed as one of the elements on the list. The practice of henna making has been given as a joint submission by the Permanent Delegation of the UAE to UNESCO. Yes, the video shot features Emirati women who are discussing the importance of this craft in the submission. Another element, the Semsemiah instrument has also been included in the list. For those who aren’t aware, this is an instrument, which is used for playing. The instrument is a major component of traditional arts and is often played at social events and celebrations, especially in coastal areas. Played during terminal gatherings, it is often accompanied by melodies that relay the stories of maritime heritage.

So, with these inclusions from Saudi Arabia, one is bound to feel proud of their heritage and now even such prestigious organisations recognise their importance.
