The rapid growth of the online travel industry has brought about numerous benefits, making travel more accessible and affordable for millions of people worldwide. However, this digital boom has also attracted malicious actors seeking to exploit vulnerabilities within these platforms.

Airbnb has teamed up with the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators (IAFCI) as travellers begin to plan their next year’s vacations. This coincides with a recent YouGov consumer study revealing that Gen Z and Millennials are most likely to admit to falling for a scam, with victims typically losing INR 1,02,233.

According to the study, which was commissioned by Airbnb, finding deals has become more important due to the rising cost of living. Almost 50% of Indian travellers are willing to be less cautious when booking a vacation if doing so would result in significant financial savings, and over 40% are willing to take a chance to save money, even if they think a deal is too good to be true. This is particularly crucial for younger tourists since, in contrast to the widespread perception that Baby Boomers are the most prone to fall victim to fraud, 30% of Gen Zers say they have been cheated more than any other generation.

The results emphasise the importance of using a reputable source, particularly when making online purchases. As a platform based on trust, Airbnb has invested in supporting our community in protecting their data and reservations. These precautions include systems and teams specifically designed to prevent scams and user-to-user messages on the platform that serve as reminders.
