A 4.3 magnitude earthquake shook Gujarat’s Kachchh district early on Tuesday, startling residents and setting off minor panic. The tremors, felt shortly before 7 AM, were strong enough to displace household items and shake buildings. CCTV footage from homes and shops captured the jarring moment, prompting renewed discussions around earthquake preparedness in the region.
Impact Of The Gujarat Earthquake
CCTV cameras captured the exact moment tremors hit parts of Kachchh on Tuesday morning. In several clips shared on social media and local news outlets, ceiling fans swung violently, cupboards rattled, and objects fell to the ground. People can be seen rushing outdoors, fearing aftershocks.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake struck at 6:40 AM. The epicentre was located approximately 28 kilometres north-northeast of Bhachau, at a depth of 10 kilometres. Kachchh, being in India’s highest seismic risk zone, Zone V, often experiences such tremors.
As reported by Times Now, the quake did not cause any fatalities or structural damage. However, the sudden jolt served as a reminder of the district’s vulnerability to seismic activity.
Local Authorities Responded Quickly, No Major Damage
According to Times Now, the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) confirmed that no casualties or major incidents were reported. Local authorities carried out immediate inspections of key infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and government buildings, to ensure public safety.
Police teams and emergency services remained on standby throughout the morning. While most daily activities resumed as usual, some residents, especially those in Bhachau, remained cautious. A few schools noted lower attendance, as parents preferred to keep their children home.
Officials urged residents not to panic and advised them to follow safety protocols during such natural events. They also discouraged the spread of misinformation through unverified sources.
Seismic History Makes Kachchh A High-Risk Zone
Kachchh has a long history with earthquakes. The most devastating in recent memory remains the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, which measured 7.7 on the Richter scale and claimed thousands of lives. Since then, Gujarat has significantly improved its disaster preparedness.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the region continues to experience minor to moderate tremors frequently. These serve as warnings for better structural planning and increased public awareness.
