Sikkim is the smallest Northeastern state. And it is divided into four parts, and while some areas can be visited easily, some require a permit. Yep, you read that right! You need a permit to visit North Sikkim and if this beautiful northeastern state is on your mind, then here are five permit protected areas in Sikkim that must be on your list. Read on, and don’t forget to add these places to your list.
1. Gurudongmar Lake
Also known as the highest lake in India and one of the highest in the world, Gurudongmar is a holy lake nestled in Lachen, North Sikkim. Situated at a staggering height of 17,800ft above sea level, you need a permit to visit this lake. Only Indians are allowed to visit this holy lake and if you are travelling with senior citizens, carrying an oxygen can is a must. PS: One portion of the lake is never frozen, and you’ll see that once you reach there. In terms of the permit, your cab driver will arrange it for you, or you can apply for it at the Gangtok DC office.
2. Kalla Pathar
Nestled in Lachen, Kalla Pathar is a mountain divided between India and Nepal. So a part of it can be seen in India and the other from Nepal. Located 15,200ft above sea level, you again need a permit to visit this place. No travel company usually adds this place to their itinerary, and you need to arrange for the permit after reaching Gangtok. Your cab driver helps you with that. People cover this permit-protected area with Gurudongmar lake in a day. So start early to enjoy this place to its fullest.
3. Nathula Pass
Located around 50km from Gangtok, Nathula pass is the Indo-China border at 14140ft above sea level. You must note that only Indians can visit this place from Wednesday to Sunday. You cannot go here on Monday and Tuesday. In a day, only 75 permits are allotted, and cars can go up only till 11 AM. Post that, no vehicles are allowed at this place. This permit-protected place is truly a must-visit.
4. Zero Point
Located in Lachung, Zero Point is another permit protected area in North Sikkim that should be on your list. Located at an altitude of 15000ft above sea level, reaching the last outpost of civilization is an experience. The route is packed with snow-capped mountains, and you again need a permit to visit this place.
5. Yumthang Valley
Also known as the valley of flowers of Sikkim, Yumthang valley is in Lachung. People cover Zero Point and Yumthang Valley in a day. You again need a permit but trust me- this place cannot be missed. During the spring season, the entire valley is covered with red Rhododendron, and it’s a sight to watch.
