5 Stunning Lakes In Italy You Cannot Miss
1. Lake Como
All thanks to Virat Kohli-Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone, all Indians know about Lake Como! This stunning lake is nestled against the Italian Alps and is a sight for sore eyes. It is the third largest lake in Italy and has been the favourite getaway of wealthy people since Roman times. The luxurious villas and quaint villages here are perfect for a relaxing vacation or a romantic getaway. And who knows, you might even spot a celebrity while you’re there!
2. Lake Garda
Lago di Garda, Benaco, or simply Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. It is also one of the most stunning lakes in the country! The lake is a popular retreat and is located between Brescia and Milan on the west, and Verona and Venice on the east. This Northern Italian lake is known for its pristine water and you will find people boating and windsurfing here a lot. On the south end of the lake, you can visit the town of Sirmione and enjoy the rich history of the place at various archaeological sites and villas that date back to the 12th and 14th centuries. All in all, if you’re looking for a peaceful and less crowded place to relax, then Lake Garda should definitely be on your bucket list.
3. Lake Maggiore
Located in Southern Italy, Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in the country. The lake is shared by Switzerland and Italy and is home to several islands, including the famous Isola Bella. Its shorelines are divided between Piedmont and Lombardy in Italy and Ticino in Switzerland. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate around the lake region, you can spot many exotic plants and trees here. To make the most of the scenic beauty of Lake Maggiore, you can take a Mottarone Cable Car up the mountain. Or you can go for a cruise on the resplendent lake.
4. Lake Orta
Lake Orta, without any doubt, is one of the most beautiful places in Northern Italy. The lake sees fairly less crowd and is surrounded by verdant hills with secluded, sacred sites. It is often called a secret gem of Italy and if you want to spend a vacation taking long strolls along a beautiful lake and enjoying delicious, authentic Italian grub in a cafe, then the islands along this lake should be on your itinerary! While you’re visiting the lake, you can also check out Sacro Monte di Orta, a UNESCO World Heritage site or head to Switzerland for a day-long trip.
5. Lake Iseo
Also known as Sebino, Lake Iseo sits equally between Bergamo and Brescia. This quaint but stunning lake is much smaller than the aforementioned lakes but is bound to make your heart happy at the very first sight! If you’re a wine lover, then this lake should definitely be a part of your Italy itinerary. The southeastern banks of this lake lie along the vineyards of the Franciacorta. So, you can enjoy sparkling wine while taking long walks along Lake Iseo. Besides that, you can also take a boat ride to picturesque Monte Isola. It is the largest populated island in a southern European lake and the best bit is that there are no cars allowed there! So, you can walk or take a mule to explore the island!
