5 Surfing Spots In South India That Are Perfect For Adventurers

In the surfing world, India is still relatively unexplored. You can quickly see its potential when you look at it on the map. When it comes to finding surfing spots in South India, the majority of the area is still untapped. With that much ocean out there, however, and nothing off the southern tip of India for thousands and thousands of kilometres except Antarctica, along with that much exposure to the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Bay of Bengal, you can be sure that there will be some amazing waves when the conditions are right. There are, you’re correct!

Here are our favourite surfing spots in South India:

1. Mulki, Karnataka

India’s first surfing school was started in this quaint town in the South of Karnataka. Many foreign visitors and local adventurers prefer Mulki over Goa’s crowds. The sun, the beach and the surf just feel different here. Mulki is well-known for its water sports, including surfing, stand-up paddling, and long-distance recreational kayaking. You can also spot Rammohan Paranjpe, India’s first and only surf photographer riding these waves during surf season

2. Gokarna, Karnataka

3. Maravanthe, Karnataka

The 6km long Maravanthe beach provides a variety of wave conditions. Within 15 meters of the water’s edge, a two-lane highway parallels the ocean along a portion of the beach. A large freshwater lake is located on the other side of the highway. The Sri Narasimha avatar, the incarnation who vanquishes evil and guards children, has a temple here that is 2,000 years old. Surf till you are unable to stand up any longer and your arms are ready to drop!

4. Varkala, Kerala

Approximately 47 km north of Trivandrum, it opens onto a string of beautiful beaches with beige sand and dense jungles on either side. One of the most well-liked surfing spots in South India is Varkala Beach. The primary feature of this beach is its longboard-friendly waves, which make it ideal for both novice and expert surfers. There are a lot of surf schools around this small coastal town, too.

5. Kovalam, Kerala

The only location on the Keralan coast that can truly compete with Varkala, the emerging surf destination, is Kovalam Surf. This one, which is mostly the property of local surf schools operating with vacationing Indians from the larger metropolis, is still not getting as much attention as it deserves. The ambiance is definitely captivating. Kovalam is laid-back and endearing. Its beaches dotted with large palm trees call your name as they sway in the breeze!
