Nepal is no stranger to earthquakes. The country faced a massive earthquake of 6.4 magnitude. According to state-run Nepal Television, around 140 persons were hurt in the Western Nepalese districts of Jajarkot and Rukum. To aid with rescue operations, security forces have been sent in.

Strong Earthquake Hits Nepal

According to representatives of the National Earthquake Measurement Centre, the epicentre of the earthquake was in the Lamidanda region of Jajarkot. The 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit late on Friday night.

According to BBC, the earthquake was reported via Nepal’s Monitoring and Research Centre at 23:47 local time (18:02 GMT). With a magnitude of 5.6, the US Geological Survey classified the earthquake as shallow, indicating that it occurred closer to the surface of the earth.

Nepal has witnessed numerous seismic events throughout its history, some of which have left a lasting impact on its landscape, people, and culture. Local media broadcasted video images of multi-story brick houses with crumbling façade. Posts on social media showed people sifting through debris in the dark to extract survivors from the wreckage of fallen buildings.

Within an hour following the initial earthquake, three further tremors were detected, and many people chose to spend the remainder of the night outside out of concern for other earthquakes and potential damage to their homes. Strong earthquakes were detected in Delhi and other nearby Indian towns, as well as in the capital of Nepal.

According to reports, Nepal’s prime minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has departed for the impacted area. He posted on X, expressing his “deep sorrow” over the deaths and property damage caused by the earthquake. He also stated he had given the go-ahead for security authorities to start rescue and relief efforts right away.

However, landslides caused by the earthquake are obstructing roadways, making search and rescue efforts more difficult. On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his sorrow over the deaths brought on by the earthquake in Nepal.

Nepal Has Faced Strong Tremors Before

Nepal’s history is marked by a series of devastating earthquakes, some of which have shaped the country’s culture and infrastructure.  A 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Bajhang’s western area last month caused injuries. Two catastrophic earthquakes struck the nation in 2015, leaving 22,309 people injured and 9,000 dead.

Because of its location at the meeting point of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, it is prone to earthquakes. Massive geological pressure happens because the collision of the two plates. The movement of the Indian plate beneath the Eurasian plate, which causes the Himalayan mountain range to rise, is the primary source of most earthquakes in Nepal. This ongoing tectonic activity ensures that Nepal remains a seismically active region.

Earthquakes in Nepal have had a profound impact on the country, affecting both its people and its natural environment. In the face of such seismic challenges, the people of Nepal have shown remarkable resilience.

In the face of such seismic challenges, the people of Nepal have shown remarkable resilience. We hope that the country and its people come out of this grievance soon.
