The Maha Kumbh is a major pilgrimage and festival that is held in a cycle of 12 years. It celebrates a revolution completed by Brihaspati (Jupiter) and is held at four riverside pilgrimage sites–Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain–in rotation. It is believed that taking a Shahi Snan (royal bath) during the Kumbh Mela helps purify the soul, wash away sins, and attain Moksha. The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 will begin on January 13 with the Paush Purnima Snan and conclude on February 26, on the day of Maha Shivratri.

Devotees believe during the Samudra Manthan, a Kumbh (pot) filled with Amrit (sacred nectar) emerged. To make sure it does not reach the hands of the Asuras, Lord Vishnu disguised himself as Mohini. He then seized the pot and fled with it. As he was being chased by the Asuras, a few drops of the sacred nectar fell on earth. These places are believed to be Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. That’s why the Kumbh Mela is held at these sites on a rotating basis.
