What Do We Know?

As a peace agreement to stop the tragic civil war, the Papua New Guinea government had made a promise of the vote in 2001, as a part of a peace agreement. And this went on for around a decade where more than 20,000 people were killed or about 10 per cent of the population of Bougainville. There has been dissatisfaction among the people of Bougainville over the implementation of procedures for its autonomy and the distribution of guaranteed financial grants, for which it was entitled to, but it was not provided by Papua New Guinea. And there have been numerous attempts in the past to gain independence from Papua New Guinea.

And now the people of the autonomous region of Bougainville are celebrating this event, not only because it’s a new country but also the fact that the referendum marks an important part of the said peace agreement. Now even though 98% of people voted in favour of this independence this new nation won’t be built in a day. The referendum is non-binding so negotiations will take place between the governments of Papua New Guinea and Bougainville. And only after this a decision will be made. In the meantime, it definitely is a reason to celebrate as there will be one more country adorning the world map and world history.
