A new dinosaur species has been discovered by scientists, and it’s now going on display at the Natural History Museum in London, UK. Reportedly, the skeleton of this dinosaur is 150 million years old and just 500 cm tall, much smaller than the giant dinosaurs we have seen in the movies.

Natural History Museum Is Now Home To A 150-Million-Year-Old Dino Skeleton

Fans of Jurassic Park or anyone obsessed with dinosaurs might find this news super exciting. As per a report in Time Out, a 150-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton has been discovered! And not just that, it’s a completely different species altogether. Can you believe it? We have all read about these prehistoric animals that lived centuries ago, but discovering a whole new species has surprised even the scientists. The Natural History Museum on their X account also confirmed the news by sharing the image with the caption, “There’s a brand new dinosaur species in town. Say hello to never-seen-before Enigmacursor mollyborthwickae”.

Named Enigmacursor mollyborthwickae, or just Enigmacursor, this dinosaur died 150 million years ago but has only just been officially recognised by scientists. As per the report, it was a two-legged herbivore and is believed to have roamed the wetlands which is in the US, during the late Jurassic period. The dinosaur is just 500 cm tall. Though it’s still unclear whether that was the full height of this species or if this particular one was not fully grown when it died.

Enigmacursor Is A Tiny Herbivorous Dino

As per the Time Out report, the name ‘Enigma’ has its backstory. For many years, scientists did not think this fossil belonged to a dinosaur at all. It was something of a mystery. That’s why the word ‘Enigma’ was decided. The term ‘Cursor’ is Latin for ‘runner’, and was added because this tiny dinosaur was probably quite speedy. Unlike the giant monster like T Rex, this species was not only small but also a herbivore. Fascinating, right?

According to Professor Susannah Maidment, co-author of the study on Enigmacursor, this rare specimen is of serious scientific importance. She mentioned that they did not just assign it a familiar name like other species. She added that proper classification and taxonomic work like this helps in understanding the evolution of these fascinating creatures.
