The Maharashtra government’s plan to build the ₹229-crore Radio Club Jetty near the Gateway of India has sparked heated discussions online. Meant to serve yachts owned by VIPs, celebrities, and cricketers, the ambitious project has drawn criticism from citizens who question the necessity of such an exclusive facility.
Public Funds For Private Luxury?
Netizens have taken to social media to express their discontent over the Radio Club Jetty, questioning the allocation of taxpayer money for a facility that caters to the elite. Many believe that the funds could be better utilised for improving public transport infrastructure or enhancing existing jetties for common commuters.
One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, “₹229 crore for a VIP jetty? Meanwhile, Mumbai’s ferries and public transport continue to struggle. Priorities need a rethink.” Another user commented, “Why are public funds being used for private luxury? The Radio Club Jetty should be accessible to all, not just the rich and famous.”

Government Defends The Radio Club Jetty Project
Despite the online backlash, Minister of Ports Development Nitesh Rane defended the Radio Club Jetty project, stating that it would enhance Mumbai’s status as a world-class maritime hub. He also emphasised that the jetty could boost tourism and attract high-end visitors to the city.

Supporters of the Radio Club Jetty project argue that the Radio Club Jetty will decongest the existing Gateway of India jetty, which currently accommodates both public ferries and private yachts. “It’s about efficiency and modernisation,” said a maritime industry expert. “Having a separate jetty for VIP yachts will free up space for public transport boats.”

However, the explanation has done little to pacify critics, who continue to demand greater transparency and inclusivity in public infrastructure projects. Whether the government will address these concerns about Radio Club Jetty remains to be seen, but for now, the Radio Club Jetty remains a hot topic of debate among Mumbai’s residents.
