Recently, grand plans for the development of Abha International Airport were revealed. As a result, there will be a complete overhaul of the international airport, which is located in the Asir province of the country. Increasing its capacity of passengers to 13 million passengers annually, this development will also increase its number of flights per year to over 90,000. With it expected to be completed by 2028, here’s all about the development plans of the Abha International Airport.

Abha International Airport To Be Developed

On October 12, Thursday, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Bin Salman Al Saud unveiled development plans for the airport which is located in the South-west of the country. The airport, Abha International Airport is set to see a major overall. This means it will grow from an existing 10,500 square metres to a massive 65,000 square metres, just in the first phase. Moreover, this development is expected to be completed by 2028. So, what this will do is that it will obviously increase the passenger capacity to a massive 13 million passengers annually. At the moment, it is at 1.5 million! Not to mention, this upgrade in passengers also means that there will be more than 90,000 flights per year, which is basically trebling the present capacity of the airport.

New Designs Reveal An Increase In Passenger Capacity To Over 13 Million

The designs for this impressive project were released by the Saudi Press Agency, and it revealed that there will be 20 gates with 41 check-in counters. Not to mention, there will also be seven self-service and check-in desks. As it happens, the expansion plan also includes the construction of passenger boarding bridges, self-service facilities, and a better parking infrastructure. In the pictures, it’s evident that the design of the new airport will be an ode to the architectural identity of the region and showcase the Saudi culture, but it will also be repeated with quite a bit of modern technology. This is easily visible in the spacious design, boasting ample greenery and wide walkways.

This Development Is A Part Of Saudi Vision 2030

According to a report by The National, it was revealed that the construction of the Abha Airport began in the year 1957 and it was opened to the public after two years. This development, as a result, is a part of the Saudi Vision 2030. For those who weren’t aware, it’s worth mentioning that this vision aims to increase air connectivity to 250 destinations. As a result, it will be able to transport 30 million passengers. There are several other ongoing developments in the country, which include the Red Sea, Qiddiya, and the NEOM.

Not to mention, with the completion of this monumental project, there will be a higher efficiency experience offering seamless services for travellers.
