“Absolutely Gutted,” Virat Kohli On Bengaluru Stampede That Killed 11 People During RCB Victory Event

What was supposed to be the biggest celebration for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans in Bengaluru, turned into a nightmare for many families. Piles of shoes and sandals lay as grim reminders of the deadly stampede near Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday evening. The stampede claimed 11 lives and left around 33 people gravely injured.

Bengaluru Stampede During RCB Victory Parade Claims 11 Lives

Wearing RCB’s jersey and waving flags of the team, 2-3 lakh fans gathered outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday to celebrate the team’s maiden IPL victory. While the authorities expected a large turnout, the actual attendance far exceeded the available space and security arrangements of the stadium which could accommodate only 35,000 people.

According to media reports, eager fans climbed trees, clung to poles, and even scaled towering walls of the stadium to get a glimpse of their favourite players. While the authorities attempted to control the crowd, it soon turned chaotic and unmanageable, eventually triggering a stampede near the Bengaluru stadium. Before the security deployment could grasp the severity of the situation, several people had collapsed and lost consciousness. They were rushed to nearby hospitals.

According to The Economic Times, at least 11 people lost their lives during the Bengaluru stampede and around 33 were injured because of the chaos. It is to be noted that the city police had earlier cancelled the RCB victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium. They cited security reasons as one of the reasons. Furthermore, they had a hard time controlling the crowd during the team felicitation programme at Vidhana Soudha as well.

Heartbroken by the turn of events, Royal Challengers Bengaluru issued an official statement. “RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extends heartfelt condolences to the affected families,” they said.

Virat Kohli also reacted to the Bengaluru stampede with a post on Instagram and said, “At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted 💔”
