Abu Dhabi recently released an important notification for pet parents in the emirate. Yes, starting from February 3, a new animal ownership service is going to be launched. Under this, it becomes mandatory to register one’s microchip pets. Here is all you need to know about this development that extends to dogs and cats.

In a recent announcement by the Department of Municipalities and Transport, pet parents will now be given a one-year grace period to complete their pet’s registration. During this, they will not be facing any penalties. But if you happen to be someone who is running a business, which owns cats and dogs, you will need to wrap up the registration process in six months. The registration is free and will be available through the TAMM portal.

From February onwards, you can visit any of the veterinary facilities in Abu Dhabi, where you can register your pets. It is being done to create a better environment for pets and pet parents. The aim is to achieve fewer stray animals, easier identification, organised records, and better animal welfare.

With the new rule, Abu Dhabi vets are already bracing for a surge in pet registrations. Yes, several nurseries across the emirate are already getting phone calls from pet parents enquiring about how to get their four-legged buddy registered. While some are concerned about privacy, others want to ask if they should do it or if the clinic has to register for them. With this development, parents will become more aware of their responsibility, which will make them think before adopting a new animal into the family.

It’s worth mentioning that the new platform will be linking the animal’s identity with the owner. As a result, the registration will include all the information about the animal, including its health and vaccination details as well. So, if a pet gets lost or injured, clinics across the emirate will be able to access the information from the central database.

With there being a centralised database, the clinics which initially microchipped the pet will be alerted. In case a pet goes missing, they will be immediately able to flag them. So, with this development, pet parents can certainly breathe a sigh of relief.
