Now, in a move to boost transparency and accountability, Abu Dhabi Police has updated its regulations regarding the use of cameras by officers. Here’s more about this update that happened on Friday, January 17.

Abu Dhabi Police Updates Regulations Regarding Cameras

On January 17, Friday, Abu Dhabi police took to social media posts that allowed officers to record both public and private spaces when on a legally approved search and arrest operation. Yes, the new policy allows the use of cameras by the officers, however, they must be visible. This means the camera should be either fixed to the officer’s military or civilian uniform so that there is transparency and public awareness is maintained.

With this updated regulation, officers will be required to place the cameras in a clear view. Not to mention, detainees must also be informed when the recordings are happening so that there is full transparency during any interaction. In fact, a key aspect of this regulation is the focus on confidentiality. Yes, securing the handling of recorded content, it is important to preserve the integrity of these recordings. For this purpose, Abu Dhabi police will employ secure storage methods so that there is no tampering and there is no unauthorised alterations. Moreover, officers cannot publish or share recorded footage unless it is for an official purpose and there is prior approval that has been taken from the relevant authorities.
