According to an article which was recently published by The Indian Express or IE, this particular mode of transport, as per authorities is increasingly becoming obsolete and hazardous. The tram operates in the middle of the road.

However, as per the state transport minister cited in the IR article, Snehashish Chakraborty, Kolkata does not have nearly as much road space as larger cities like Mumbai and Delhi. Tram as a mode of transport was discontinued long ago in these cities.

As of now, there are three routes on which trams operate – Gariahat to Esplanade, Shyambazar to Esplanade and Tollygunge to Ballygunge. As per the officials, soon, only one route will be operational. This one route is kept for heritage preservation purposes.
