Even if you were not a language nerd as a kid, you definitely should be aware of the works of William Shakespeare. From Othello to Romeo and Juliet, all his works are acknowledged masterpieces. Making big news again, Shakespeare’s works from 1623 are going to be displayed. The First Folio edition of the rare book will be displayed at Guildhall Library.
Observe Shakespeare’s Iconic Works Up Close
As a celebration of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, this book will be brought to light after 400 years. This book, with all his works, was originally published seven long years after Shakespeare’s demise. Along with this first folio edition, smaller original copies of Othello and Henry IV Part One, as well as another folio edition, will also be available for the public to see at the Guildhall Library.
As per the principal librarian of Guildhall Library, only 235 of the 750 originally printed copies of this book still survive in the world. However, only a quarter of those had all the works of the brilliant writer. The one being displayed is also one of those complete copies. This copy also has a remarkable paper quality that has survived four centuries. In October 2020, another complete copy of this masterpiece was sold for $10 million.

Become A Part Of First Folio 400 Celebration At Guildhall Library
After William Shakespeare’s death, actors John Heminge and Henry Condell compiled this folio edition as a tribute to the great writer’s works. This marvellous attempt by Shakespeare’s friends is the only reason the world got to witness some amazing texts like Macbeth, Twelfth Night, and The Tempest.
This copy going on display was bought by William Petty Fitzmaurice in 1760, who sold it to the London Library in 1806, along with his own library. It was only in 1913 that the book got into the possession of the Guildhall Library. Given its delicate condition, it is made available for the public to view occasionally. This time around, the audience will be able to cherish it for around 5 hours.
This display is a part of Guildhall Library’s First Folio 400 celebration and will be organised on Monday, from 10:30 to 15:30 BST.
