After India experienced one of the coldest Mays in over a century, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave warnings for several areas in North India. The temperature in Delhi soared to 45°C on Monday and Tuesday. Scroll on to know more.
North India Sizzles As Mercury Rises To 45°C
According to Hindustan Times, there is no relief from the scorching heat for Delhi and surrounding regions right now. IMD has issued warnings for heatwave-like conditions, predicting high temperatures this week. As per the weather department, on Monday, the temperature recorded at Delhi’s Safdarjung observatory was 43.3°C, 44.3°C in Palam, 43.3°C in Lodi Road, 44.9°C in Ridge and 45.3 °C in Ayanagar. These conditions are likely to persist on Wednesday as well and have prompted IMD to issue an orange alert for a heatwave.
Not just the capital, several northern states are currently experiencing heatwave-like conditions and higher temperatures. IMD has issued a red alert for heatwaves in Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh in Rajasthan. On June 9, Sri Gangangar, Jhansi, and Agra reported record-high temperatures.
In Punjab and Haryana, the temperatures soared to 46.4°C in many areas. Chandigarh recorded the season’s highest maximum temperature so far at 43.8°C.
Weather Might Improve Soon
The good news is that there might be some respite in North India from Thursday as IMD forecasted a slight improvement in heatwave conditions. The weather in Delhi-NCR is likely to shift with a forecast of light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, and gusty winds. As per IMD’s prediction, ‘partly cloudy, very light rain’ is on the cards for days following June 12.
