If you frequently travel via the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), you might have noticed the high number of stray dogs. In order to safeguard travellers from stray dogs, the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and some other organisations took a proactive initiative. They vaccinated stray dogs so that they don’t pose a danger to travellers and people passing by. Here are the details about this initiative.
Stray Dogs Around Mumbai Airport Get Vaccinated Against Rabies
This particular initiative was a collaborative effort made by the BMC, Captain India, NGO Yoda, MIAL, and Zimaxx. According to an article recently published by The Indian Express, a total of 26 stray dogs around the CSMIA, which is also commonly known as Mumbai Airport, were vaccinated against rabies.
This initiative was carried out on the morning of the 22nd of August, Tuesday around the Terminal 1 of the airport. The article stated that the airport witnesses a huge influx of travellers every day. Hence, in order to ensure the safety of these travellers, the move was undertaken.
Stray dogs, if not vaccinated, can be extremely dangerous. They are known to carry diseases like hydatid disease, anthrax and most popularly, rabies.

Stray Dogs Also Received QR-Tagged Aadhaar Cards
Recently, the Mumbai airport carried out a similar initiative wherein stray dogs received a QR-tagged Aadhaar card. This QR tag will have all the information about the dog including information about the person responsible for taking care of it.
There is also a Near-Field Communication or NFC tag. If a dog is injured, anyone could scan their QR tag which will send an alert to the app’s command sender. They can identify the dog’s location and notify the person responsible for the caretaking of the particular stray dog.
The BMC is also planning on carrying out a mini-pulse vaccination drive. This drive is set to vaccinate close to 15,000 stray dogs against rabies.
