Cathay and Singapore Airlines (SIA), two leading Asia-Pacific carriers, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a series of initiatives for sustainable aviation. This partnership signifies a major step towards a greener future for the aviation industry in the region.
Championing Sustainable Aviation Fuel
The MoU, signed in Dubai during the 80th International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting, focuses on two key areas: promoting the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and sharing best practices for operational sustainability.
Both airlines recognise SAF as a crucial tool for decarbonising air travel. Their joint efforts will involve raising public awareness about SAF’s benefits and advocating for supportive government policies. It will promote the creation of a standardised global framework for tracking emission reductions achieved through SAF use. Additionally, Cathay and SIA will explore opportunities for joint procurement of SAF at strategic locations. This aims to boost production and wider adoption across the industry.
Sharing Sustainability Expertise
The second pillar of the agreement focuses on knowledge sharing. Cathay and SIA will exchange best practices to minimise single-use plastics, reduce waste, and improve energy efficiency in ground and cargo operations. This collaboration will accelerate the implementation of sustainable solutions within both airlines.
Cathay Pacific Group CEO, Ronald Lam, emphasised the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainability goals. He highlighted Cathay’s target of 10% SAF usage by 2030 and its commitment to fostering a reliable SAF ecosystem in the region.
Singapore Airlines CEO, Goh Choon Phong, echoed this sentiment, stressing the airline’s dedication to embedding sustainability across its operations. He sees the partnership with Cathay as a catalyst for broader industry collaboration and a foundation for a more sustainable aviation future in Asia-Pacific.
