After Swiggy, Zomato May Introduce ₹2 Platform Fees; Here’s What This Means For Foodies

Foodies, we have not-so-good news for you. Food deliveries are all set to get costlier, as after Swiggy, Zomato may be next in line to introduce platform fees for ₹2. If you’re wondering what this means and how it can change the dynamics for foodies, read on to get all the deets!

Zomato To Starts Testing ₹2 Platform Fees

According to a report by The Economic Times, Zomato has introduced a platform fee of ₹2. The food delivery app will introduce a compulsory platform fee irrespective of the cart value. This decision is taken by the company to remain profitable after it reported its first-ever quarterly profit in Q1Fy24.

Zomato introduced a platform fee after food delivery aggregator, Swiggy did the same for all its orders. Swiggy rolled out this ₹2 platform fee earlier this year. It was levied in Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. But it didn’t disclose yet when they will roll this out in other cities. But the company didn’t levy this fee for Instamart orders. Swiggy in a statement revealed that the platform fee is a nominal fee which helps the app improve its platform and enhance its features for a seamless app experience.

Food Delivery May Get Costlier

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Zomato revealed to ET that the platform fee is currently in an experiment phase. They may or may not scale, said the spokesperson. For the June quarter, Zomato posted a profit of ₹2 crore and the management revealed that they hope to sustain the company’s profitability in the future quarters.

Zomato is currently only testing the platform fee on select users. It hasn’t been introduced on Blinkit yet. Zomato revealed to Moneycontrol that this small fee helps to pay bills to keep the platform running. Akshant Goyal, Zomato’s Chief Financial Officer revealed to MoneyControl stated that the company hasn’t taken a call to levy this fee yet.

Zomato will also levy this platform fee for both its users under Zomato Gold and its regular users.
