Climate change is a significant issue for individuals and businesses, particularly those near Goa’s beaches. But currently, the beach vendors are experiencing distress due to the full moon. As the tourism season approaches, South Goa beaches have gained advance permission to set up their shacks on the beach. However, the shacks have been swamped due to rising water levels, particularly in Goa’s Majorda area. The shack owners attribute the increase in sea levels to the full moon. On top of this, the tourism season has already been delayed due to unusual rainfall.
Effects Of High Tide On South Goa’s Shack Owners
The first and obvious effect of the high tide on South Goa’s shack owners is the low tourist turnout because the shacks are flooded. Which makes it difficult for tourists to visit. Camilo Cardoz, a shack operator stated to Herald Goa that the full moon has caused similar incidents in the past as well. However, no loss has been suffered.
Difficulties Faced By South Goa Shack Owners
The South Goa shack owners have had a rollercoaster time since the COVID-19 lockdown. This year, the tourism department renewed their beach shack licenses in August. Many people started their shack construction after Ganesh Chaturthi, but because of the unexpected rains, all these operations went haywire. As Diwali is around the corner, shack owners want their places to be set up ahead of the peak business season.
High tide caused property damage to shack owners, including deck beds and umbrellas, as water entered their premises. Flood water destroyed the hard work of shack owners and their properties overnight.
Few of the beach shacks were already affected by continuous rain before the high tides.
