When you think beaches, you think Goa. That’s the allure of Goa’s serene, stunning palm-fringed beaches. For long, the government has focussed on facilitating beach shacks. And now a government-appointed entity has set up ‘no selfie’ and ‘safe swim’ zones to ensure the safety of beachgoers. Here’s what you need to know about the future of Goan beaches.
Goa Beaches Get ‘No Selfie’ & “Safe Swim’ Zones Ahead Of Tourist Season
According to a report by The Times Of India, a government-appointed agency in Goa has taken major steps to ensure the safety of beachgoers. For this, the agency has demarcated ‘no selfie’ and ‘safe swim’ zones at beaches. Amid the tourist season, the destination is working extra hard to maintain the safety of its tourists. Lifesavers from Drishti Marine have successfully reduced over 392 individuals from drowning on Goa’s beaches this year.
So, this initiative is seen as a preventive measure at Goa’s beaches, a magnet for tourists. It will also help prevent untoward accidents in the future. Drishti Marine is also responsible for monitoring the weather and sea conditions daily in Goa. Earlier in May this year, Drishti Marine announced few Goa beaches were getting ‘paw squads’ consisting of 11 dogs. These dogs were trained to spot and rescue people in distress and also locate missing kids.
Some beaches were also equipped with two AI monitoring systems— Aurus and Triton— to help lifesavers. These robots have the ability to monitor the surroundings, evaluate potential danger and alert on-duty lifesavers with real-time information to respond quickly to danger. Aurus was used to help with beach closures at Miramar Beach in North Goa. And Triton was tested at Benaulim, Morjim, Baina, Galgibag and Velsao beaches.

Smaller Beaches With Rough Sea Conditions Lack Safe Swimming Zones
As yet another new tourist season kickstarted in Goa, lifeguards have erected 89 ‘no swim zone’ signboards with red flags along treacherous stretches. As per a report by Herald Goa, beaches like Candolim, Baga, Calangute and Agonda have multiple no-swim zone signboards. Certain high-risk areas on beaches also have ‘no selfie’ zones to prevent selfie accidents, which Goa isn’t a stranger to.
Every tourist season, the government sets up new ‘no swim zones’ after monitoring the weather forecast to promise the utmost safety to its visitors. The lifeguards in Goa often emphasize the importance of strictly following basic safety measures at beaches and swimming in designated areas. While most beaches are safe for swimming, certain smaller ones may lack swim zones due to rough sea conditions. These beaches are Cabo De Rama, Canaguinim Beach and Cola Beach, to name a few.

So, as you gear up to travel to Goa this tourist season, make sure you follow the basic safety guidelines mentioned by the government-appointed agency, Drishti Marine. Also, avoid ‘no selfie’ zones and make sure you go swimming only in ‘safe to swim’ zones.
