Ahmedabad Becomes India’s First World Heritage City

In a first in India, the beautiful city of Ahmedabad is awarded the title of World Heritage City.

What Does This Mean?

At the 41st session of Unesco’s world heritage committee meet, Ahmedabad was declared a world heritage property. This decision was supported by 18 other countries including Turkey, Kazakhistan, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Portugal, Peru, Vietnam,Lebanon, Finland, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Jamaica, Tanzania,Cuba, South Korea, Angolam and Poland.

Jama Masjid

Ahmedabad was selected as the city of choice on account of it’s beautiful heritage, the co-existence of different religions, the cultural diversity, exemplary architecture and for being the birth place of Gandhi’s non-violent reforms.

Sabarmati Riverfront

Ahmedabad beat Delhi and Mumbai from India to win the prestigious title. Ahmedabad is 606 years old and was built by Emperor Ahmed Shah. It has 36 beautiful and historic structures protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
